ZEIT KUNST NIEDERÖSTEREICH, Landesgalerie für zeitgenössische Kunst, Landesgalerie Krems

In order to do justice to the importance and high quality of artistic work, “Zeit Kunst Niederösterreich” is opening new exhibition areas at two locations in the central area of Lower Austria. On the one hand, there is the secularised Dominican Church in the centre of Krems, whose adjoining  cloisters also house the City Museum, and on the other hand the Shedhalle realised by Hans Hollein in the St Pölten cultural district, which since 2002 has formed an architectural unit with the Lower Austria Provincial Museum.

The first exhibition, which takes place in the framework of “Zeit Kunst Niederösterreich” in the Krems Dominican Church, is dedicated to the work of

Manfred Wakolbinger (b. 1952) and under the title “Up From the Skies”, shows a representative cross-section of his sculptural work of the last three decades, harmonised with the gothic architecture, and combined with his latest video and photo works. The centre of Manfred Wakolbinger’s artistic analysis is the reflection about the communicative possibilities of sculpture and the power of elemental forms.

For some years now he has also used photography to allow his objects to interact in a certain virtual way with various landscapes or urban spaces, so that on the one hand they seem to be “displaced”, on the other hand, however, to formally correspond with their “exotic” surroundings in unexpected ways.
