Arnulf Rainer Museum

The Arnulf Rainer Museum unites an architectural jewel with the works of the internationally recognized contemporary artist. The clear lines of the 1821 Frauenbad [women’s baths], whose prehistory goes back to Roman times, are based on a design by Charles de Moreau, one of the leading architects of French classicism. After the baths were closed, the house was opened to the public again in 1977 as an interregional exhibition center with an Arnulf Rainer retrospective. Many highly regarded presentations by famous artists and thematic exhibitions on the history and culture of the town of Baden followed, until the start of the latest general renovation in 2006.

In 2009, refurbished to the highest technical and aesthetic level by the architects Lottersberger-Messner-Dumpelnik, the Arnulf Rainer Museum celebrated its opening. In cooperation with the province of Lower Austria, the town dedicated an institution to the artist, born in Baden in 1929, which now shows his multifaceted oeuvre in exquisite monographic and thematic exhibitions. Arnulf Rainer’s work, which plays a major role in collections of the great museums of the world, can thus be comprehensively imparted to a regional and international audience.
